The Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO) directs the worldwide overseas buildings program for the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Government foreign affairs community serving abroad under the authority of the chiefs of mission. With the support of the Congress, input from other agencies and other State Department bureaus, OBO sets worldwide priorities for the design, construction acquisition, maintenance, use and sale of overseas real property and the use of sale proceeds. OBO is committed to providing energy efficient, safe, secure and functional work environments for U.S. Government personnel at diplomatic and consular facilities worldwide.

The pace of upgrading security at U.S. embassies around the world has dramatically increased. The worldwide embassy design and construction program now totals $17.5 billion over 14 years. OBO directs the worldwide overseas building program for the Department of State and the U.S. Government community serving abroad under the authority of the Chiefs of Mission.
